I’m on my way to the airport. It’s 9:30 on a Wednesday. Tonight, we ate dinner in front of the tv with all the girls. We started playing the “what do you want to watch” game, screening previews as always, until we landed on Wonder Woman. How appropriate. I want to raise strong, independent, caring and good daughters. Other than the epic fight scenes and skimpy outfits, it was an appropriate movie to engage the girls and spend the last night for a few weeks together. I laid in bed with Nora longer than usual, and couldn’t snuggle her tight enough. I laid down with Charley and didn’t object like I usually do to hearing about her day. She told me about ripping strips of colored paper to create a mosaic on “unused” (she emphasized this - so type A like her mom and I) Blackjack pizza boxes. After completing hers she listed a myriad of other friends she helped in class finish theirs. Perhaps we are already instilling Wonder-Woman-qualities in our girls. I rubbed Ruby’s back until she couldn’t keep her eyes open. When I got up to leave, she sat up and looked at me. She didn’t say anything, but I returned to bed and gave her another kiss. She was asleep instantly. My car arrived and I gave a long hug to Avery. I told her to take care of mommy. She’ll need love and respite the most, and every cell in Avery’s body was programmed with self- awareness and empathy. Tara and I both choked up saying goodbye. It’s hard to leave on this adventure without my soul matey. She makes all of this possible. I don’t know of a more supportive bride. Who would give up so much to allow their spouse to pursue a dream? And so, here I go. I’ll find out in a couple weeks, or a couple days, whether the allure of the dream was the attraction, or the adventure itself.
